[ It wasn’t easy for Karamatsu to get where he was. After he felt crestfallen with the failure of what he thought was his real passion— poetry and music— he sought out servant hood to please his lord and his kingdom… since that was just the “cool” thing to do at the time. If nobody enjoyed the things he produced from his mind and heart, maybe they would enjoy the loyal labor work and protection he could provide. Before he knew it, he had surpassed expectations as a squire and was knighted on his twenty-first birthday.. which was two years ago.
For a knight, he was a bit on the average side, and even with him doing his very best, his lord found more favor in other knights.

Really, his lord was a pretty picky thing.

That being said, his life as a knight wasn’t as adventurous as he hoped it had been. He had never saved a princess— he had never killed an ogre— he had never collected fairy dust. Karamatsu hadn’t even traveled outside of his kingdom he resided in. He was always in the back of the line when he was fighting battles— a part of him had wondered if he pursued the right occupation and lifestyle. This dreading fear would clench his thoughts when he would try to sleep, but he had sworn to himself to not pick up his harp nor his pen and parchment again.. no matter how much he wanted to sing or write. Because of the rejection he had received, Karamatsu felt it pointless to even do such things.. even for fun, and even if he thought it gave him happiness. He had a duty to perform and things to do.

One day, he heard loud rumors about a greedy creature that had been terrorizing neighborhood countrysides and villages. Of course, some of these things people took as myths, but some people took them rather seriously. For example, Karamatsu was very much interested and.. frightened at the wild idea that maybe their kingdom would be next. These agonizing fears that he had kept him up late at night, and he could not sleep.

Perhaps if he went for a walk, maybe he would be able to sleep.
Karamatsu wrapped a cloak around his body and pulled a hood over his head as stepped outside from his quarters… only to turn back around, and, for the first time in a very long time, pick up the dusty harp from his bedside mantle and blowing out the candle. Delicate feet tiptoed down the corridors until he reached the outdoors, and went for a walk.. a very long walk.

The bright moon light lit his pathway just fine, puffs of breath easing out from his lips. When he knew he was far enough from civilization, he played as he walked. Melodious chimes broke into the silence of night time, and, as much as Karamatsu wanted to sing, he held the words behind his teeth as his feet absentmindedly took him further and further into the woods.

Humming, though.. that was a different story. ]
